OUR WORK
Since TRAC formed in 2022, we've been primarily focused on access to gender-affirming care and ensuring that transgender and gender-expansive people, including those incarcerated in Maryland, have the safety, respect, and dignity they deserve. We're also working on broad community-building and support other important work for trans rights in the state.

Access to Healthcare
Access to affordable, high-quality gender-affirming care is incredibly important to the well-being of trans and gender-expansive people. It is linked to lower rates of suicide and addiction. Access to gender-affirming care makes us less likely to be discriminated against when it comes to employment and housing. It very tangibly reduces the danger of violence and harassment. Gender-affirming health care is life-saving.

We've worked to ensure access to gender-affirming healthcare through the Trans Health Equity Act and SB119, which protects gender-affirming care in Maryland from out-of-state interference.

Rights for Incarcerated Trans People
Jails and prisons are dangerous places, especially for trans and gender-expansive people. Because of issues with intake, data collection, cultural understanding, and transparency, it's difficult to propose sweeping policy changes to ensure the safety of trans people behind bars.

We believe that currently and formerly incarcerated trans people should be leading this work. In addition to advocating for budget language that requires the Department of Corrections to track and report crucial data about their transgender population, we're taking the time to build community with currently and formerly incarcerated trans people to ensure that their lived experience and expertise leads this work.
